Who can apply for housing
Applicants aged 18 and over in different life situations can apply for VAV rental accommodation.
To apply for VAV housing, you must have
- a Finnish personal identity number and
- a valid email address.
You can apply for rental housing with us whether you are employed, self-employed, unemployed, retired, a student. We also welcome pets as family members, so pets are not a barrier to getting a home.
For rental housing built with state funding (formerly known as Ara housing), the condition for obtaining housing is the urgency of the housing need. An urgent need for housing can be due to a new job in a new location, the termination of an existing home, a new family member or other life changes. In addition, the income or assets of applicants for state-subsidised rental housing must not exceed the specified limits.
If you are applying for VAV subsidised housing, the income and asset limits are not reviewed.
Credit history
We will check your credit history, but credit problems are not a barrier to obtaining a home in state-funded rental housing (Ara housing). The condition is that the disturbances are minor or that the history of payment defaults indicates that they are not recurrent. However, we will not offer rental housing to applicants whose credit reports show unpaid rent arrears. In this case, the applicant must provide a certificate from the landlord or collection agency of the outstanding rent arrears as soon as possible after submitting the application. For rent debts, it is also possible to provide a payment plan for the settlement of debts, for example with the financial and debt counselling service or the enforcement authority, as well as receipts for instalments already paid.
If you have unpaid rent or other payments to VAV, you will not be considered for tenancy until the arrears are paid in full. Any warnings you have been given about disturbances may also affect your access to accommodation.
If you apply for our free-standing properties and have a credit history, you will not be eligible for housing.
