Pets

Many people like pets, and keeping them in a usual manner permitted in VAV’s aparments. However, professional breeding or looking after dogs, cats or other pets is not permitted. If such activities are carried out in the apartment, it may result in cancellation of the tenancy.

The owner must ensure that pets are not able to startle other people or cause risk or damage. The owner must also ensure that dogs do not disturb other residents by barking or howling. Pets must not be allowed to dirty buildings or the property’s area. Washing animals in the communal areas of the property is forbidden.

The owner is liable to pay compensation for any damage caused by their pet.

Dogs

According to the Public Order Act, dogs must be kept on a leash in public areas, including in the outdoor areas of the property. The owner must ensure that the dog cannot enter children’s sand pits or play areas, not even on a leash. The law also obligates dog owners walking their dogs to pick up any faeces they leave on walkways.

Cats

According to the Public Order Act, keeping cats on a leash in public areas is not mandatory. However, according to the law the owner must ensure that the cat cannot enter children’s sand pits or play areas.

When walking your cat, it is important to consider your neighbours and discuss the matter with them. We recommend that cats are allowed to walk only under their owners’ supervision in urban areas, as cats walking free face many dangers there, and they often have a strong predatory instinct.
