VAV is reviewing balcony safety in some of its buildings

The authorities have recommended that property owners inspect the safety of balcony railing structures following the recent balcony accidents that have received public attention. VAV is also carrying out a review of the balconies in its buildings, and this work is ongoing.

The accidents reported in the media did not occur in VAV buildings. The safety concerns identified in Finland have involved balconies with fibre cement railings, as well as balconies where the lower part of the balcony railing is made of glass.

We have reviewed our property portfolio and identified the buildings that require inspection. None of our properties have the same type of fibre cement railings as those involved in the reported accident. The review and inspection of balconies with glass railings is continuing.

During the coming months, an independent expert will inspect the balconies in VAV buildings where the lower part of the balcony railing is made of glass. The inspections will take place in the autumn, once the procurement process for the inspection services has been completed. We will inform residents well in advance before the inspections take place.

No inspections will be carried out on balconies where the lower part of the railing is made of a material other than glass. The safety concerns and inspections also do not apply to the balcony glazing in the upper part of the balcony.

We encourage caution

We have not identified any safety deficiencies in the balconies of our properties. However, we encourage everyone to exercise caution when using their balconies. For example, please do not lean against the glass sections of the balcony railing.

If you notice any damage to the glass in the lower part of your balcony railing, please report it to us without delay by submitting a maintenance request through omavav.fi or by calling 010 235 1450. We will aim to carry out individual inspections before the scheduled inspection programme where necessary.
