Our sustainability work is guided by the Group’s strategy and framed bythe City of Vantaa’s ownership steering. The VAV Group holds the Finnish Ekokompassi environmental certificate.

Our sustainability programme comprises five themes that support our strategy, each with its own objectives, concrete measures and indicators. Since 2024, the VAV Group has also held the domestic Ekokompassi environmental certificate awarded by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

Our sustainability work is closely linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are central to our operations. The UN Sustainable Development Goals came into force at the start of 2016.
Reducing inequality is directly linked to VAV’s core activities. We combat segregation, provide affordable housing and offer support in challenging housing situations.
VAV develops and maintains its existing property portfolio and strives for sustainable, low-emission new-build projects. We enable and encourage our residents to live more sustainably.
As part of our climate action, we are systematically reducing our emissions. By 2030, we will switch to sourcing renewable energy, continuously improve our energy efficiency and aim for significant emissions reductions across our value chain.
VAV supports Vantaa’s ‘Nature-Positive 2030’ goal. The systematic development of VAV’s green spaces to increase their biodiversity strengthens regional biodiversity.
The Sustainable Development Goals are achieved through collaboration. We aim to promote responsibility within our partner network, and we contribute to society through organisations such as Kova ry and Rakli, amongst others.
We will continue our emission reduction measures in line with our climate roadmap. Our target for 2030 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our own direct emissions, as well as from purchased energy and indirect emissions in the value chain, from the 2024 baseline.
We are making systematic progress towards our energy-saving targets.
Energy-related policies and measures were also the main reason why our carbon footprint was 28 per cent lower in 2025 compared with the previous year.
VAV has signed up to the VAETS agreement for the period 2026–2035. The targets for the previous VAETS period (the energy efficiency agreement for rental housing associations in the property sector) were achieved ahead of schedule. At the end of 2025, our actual performance in relation to our target was 188 per cent.
Through the VAETS agreement, we are continuing our work to improve energy efficiency and reduce our climate impact. Our ETJ+ energy management system guides our energy efficiency measures, and we will have the ETJ+ energy management system certified by 2027 at the latest.
