Sustainability
Invasive alien species pose a significant threat to Finland’s biodiversity and local ecosystems. VAV actively monitors up-to-date lists of invasive alien species and works to prevent the spread of such species on its own properties.
VAV is committed to removing all harmful invasive plants found on its properties. A specific control or eradication plan is drawn up for each species identified. Examples of invasive plants include lupin, giant balsam, rugosa rose and giant hogweed.
For some species, control is particularly challenging due to their large numbers or the plants’ persistent spread. In such cases, the complete removal of the plants may take several years.
One of the most important measures in control work is to prevent the spread of seeds and plant parts. Invasive plants can spread rapidly to new areas if they are allowed to seed or grow unchecked.
Controlling invasive species is a shared responsibility. VAV reminds residents that they have an important role to play in looking after their own apartment block grounds. If non-toxic but harmful invasive plants, such as lupins, are found on the grounds, it is the resident’s responsibility to remove them without delay. Guidance on identifying and controlling invasive plants is available, for example, on the vieraslajit.fi website. Please notify the property manager if you spot any poisonous or harmful invasive species in the courtyard areas, as some plants, such as hogweed, can cause severe skin burns, so it is best to leave their control to the professionals.
At the same time, it is worth remembering that no plants may be planted directly into the ground in apartment courtyards or communal areas of the property. However, plants in pots with drainage holes are permitted. The ban on planting is part of the management of invasive species – planted plants may be invasive species or may become so over time.
Together, we can achieve more. Every invasive plant removed is a step towards a healthier and more sustainable environment. VAV continues to actively combat invasive species and encourages all residents to take part in this important work.
You can find more information about invasive species and how to identify them at vieraslajit.fi.
